In this unusual residential project three adjoining London terrace neighbours came together to undertake substantial roof extensions at the same time. The result was a smoother planning process free of local objections. A sole contractor ensured economies of scale when it came to the building work. There was also an agreement between the neighbours regarding the idiosyncratic external appearance of the extensions.

 

Each one is clad in raised-seam, diamond patterned stainless steel sheeting with a lifespan of around 70 years – substantially more than traditional cladding materials. One of the main challenges was to keep the overall weight of the extensions down, as ground conditions close to the Thames are notoriously poor.
