THE AXE

PNW Studios was asked to assess this 1930s building while it was trading as Jan’s Bar. Initial appearances were unpromising: the bar areas were too small and there was no attractive outside space. However, by looking a bit deeper and thinking laterally, a number of the possibilities became apparent. Despite being conceived as a purpose-built, concrete-framed pub, the layout was very traditional with both public and saloon bars. Each bar had its own set of toilets, which took up valuable space and blocked access to the rear of the premises.

 

The solution was to relocate the toilets in the existing coaching arch area and add a wheelchair accessible toilet. This not only freed up internal space but has also resulted in a larger courtyard garden. An infill extension was then formed on the back of the coaching arch for the kitchen and associated plant. Overall, the scheme has resulted in a much more appealing pub with daylight entering the rear bar areas and a natural flow out into a sunny courtyard garden.
