This handsome pub in Prestbury near Cheltenham had already been extended to provide a good-sized kitchen and dining area. However, the existing listed building had a major problem: patchwork repairs to the timber frame over the years had led to a loss of structural integrity between the ground and first floor. As a consequence, the outside wall was beginning to fold like a closing book.

A major repair programme was formulated and undertaken by a highly skilled heritage contractor. The building’s Cotswold stone plinth had also become heavily eroded – hastened in part by Portland cement pointing. This was sympathetically repaired by a local stonemason, while on the roof a number of missing slates have been replaced. Inside, the rear barn space has been reconfigured to allow views up into the attractive timber-framed roof trusses above.
